It is a sad time here at Scrap Addict with so many changes going on. In case you haven't been by the store lately, it no longer exists. The brick and mortar store is gone and the web store is down to only selling the last of the kits. The last of the SA kits will be rolling out the door soon and that will signify the end of an era. Not to cry, though, Felicia is moving on to some pretty exciting things and we aren't planning on closing down the community. There will still be challenges and chatting. Some of the Design Team members are taking over the running of the message boards and it will likely be moved to a new server. This little community has been around too long to be disbanded, and some of us feel like it is our online home. A few of us even have it set as our homepage, but we won't name names. ;)
Enjoy the last few weeks of summer before school starts up and enjoy the last of the great Scrap Addict kits. But don't be a stranger. Come hang out with us on the boards and upload your work. We still love scrapping and sharing our work and we still want you to be part of our community.

7/14 Monday Challenge

Oh yes, it's Monday and that means there are challenges to be had! Let's start with our regular Monday challenge which involved title placement. I want you to put that title right on a photo in your layout. I've seen this a bit lately and it was really fun when I gave it a try.

Now to the ad challenge. Jill sent me this one and I happened to have a photo on my desk that worked really well for it. It was a heritage photo where some of the people weren't very happy to be there but it's 4 generations and a fun one to have. So grab a photo (or 2 or 3....make it work!) and see what you can do with it. I know it's a landscape design but again....make it work! You can do it....yes, as I do my cheerleader back handsprings. I know you can! :)

Organizing my scraproom, one brad at a time...

We moved in to our new home just two weeks ago and of course my scraparea is the last area that will get any attention. I have been planning it though and I started to get some things done this past week that I'm really excited about. At my local Home Depot, I found stainless steel kitchen organizing items that will work wonderfully for my scrapstuff!

I mounted each of the bars to the wall with wall anchors and then added the different hanging accessories to it. You can see in the pictures that I have a spice rack on the top shelf with my brads and eyelets in it. I also have a spice rack on the middle shelf. There is a papertowel holder that I'm planning on putting ribbon spools in. Maybe I should put papertowels in it though in case of kidlets visiting my room with drinks or the inevitable paint spill.

I'm really happy with how this is going, I'm hoping that these will be a huge help in keeping my scrap area clean. Probably not, but one can hope!

Monday Challenge -- Hidden Meaning

Catherine the Challenge Goddess is on vacation this week, and you get me instead. This week's challenge is called Hidden Meaning. You know how the advertising industry loves to mess with our heads by tossing in subtle subliminal messages? I want you to somehow signify the age of at least one person in the pictures you are scrapping by anything other than actually writing the number (and writing the word spelling the number doesn't count, either...nice try). You can do this in any number of ways...number of brads, number of patterned papers, flowers, etc.

In my example, I did it twice. There are 8 small flowers to show Shona's age and then, because I couldn't leave Katy out, there are 16 little white dots next to the title for her age. You don't have to be that subtle about it. Maybe do a birthday page with their age in candle brads beneath the picture. However you want to do it. This is actually a rather fun challenge. No one might ever catch on just by looking at your page, but it's something different to aim for.

P.S. Today is my birthday, so in order to celebrate, I will put everyone who completes this week's challenge into a drawing for a RAK. Happy scrapping!

Tiny Scrappers : Part Deux

Last week we had the pleasure of having my eight year old niece stay with us. She'd received a scrapbooking kit from Santa this past Christmas so she was delighted to get the opportunity to scrap with Aunt Julie. I wish I'd had a camera when she got her first glimpse of JulieWorld. It was like Disney to her little eyes but after an afternoon of scrapping I realized that there were just too many choices for her. The next day I gathered up a bunch of older supplies and some blank cards and set my daughter and niece up at the kitchen table for a "card-a-thon." They were so entertained by it that we left everything out for the entirety of her visit. (And my much neglected dining room actually got some use.) When we did clean up I handed my niece a gallon baggie and told her she could take whatever she wanted home with her. She was thrilled. I also sent her home with several old issues of Papercrafts and Creating Keepsakes. I have no doubt that she's spread out at my sister's kitchen table right now.

They made some beautiful cards and their creativity never ceases to amaze me.

Yes, go with it. Let it go, let it happen. You're scrapping right? You're getting pages done, memories captured, stories saved? Then let it go.

Years from now no one will be looking at your books talking about your white phase

or your hearts phase

or you die cut phase

or you wierd edges phase.

They'll be happy to be looking at the pages, seeing the pictures and enjoying the stories you've saved.

6/23 Monday Challenge....and it's very edgy.

Hey there, everyone! I have an early, busy morning tomorrow and am posting this just a little early. The challenge for this week is an interesting one, I think. I want you to create a layout that has an edge that is NOT straight. Wavy, scalloped, whatever...you pick. Here is an example of one I did last week with the Eiffel Tower kit for an online class I'm taking, to illustrate what I mean. There's that wavy, pretty paper just hanging out there free in the breeze, not attached to any background cardstock. Makes for an interesting look.

It's time to let that imagination run wild with the edges of a layout. Give it a try!

Scrapbooking the hard things...

It's fun to flip through our albums and see all the wonderful things that we celebrate; birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, losing teeth, new babies...

But, sometimes we need to get real. It's hard to write about things that are not so happy, but I think that it's necessary for future generations who look through our work to know that not everything was rosy all the time and that that is OK!

So, I'm sharing a couple of layouts that I have done that are of difficult times. The first one is a letter to our daughter about an argument that her daddy and I had and how I was sorry for how I acted. The second is about the day I found out that our daughter had cerebral palsy.

Here's the journaling for the 1st one:

Your daddy and I got into a fight today. No, not on the day that I took this photo, the fight took place almost a year later. This photo of you, taken on a day so long ago, seems to capture your innocence and your character that you showed today. The argument that Daddy and I got in today was one that no child should have to witness. We said mean and hurtful things to each other. We called each other names. Mommy even threw something. All of this in front of you and Joshua’s watchful, trusting eyes. At one point, you ran up to your room. Later, when things were calmer, you came back out. You went to Daddy and told him that you were scared and had gone to your room to pray. You told Daddy that you asked Jesus and God to help you get Mommy and Daddy to stop fighting. Thank you Jordan, for your strength and your faith. I’m sorry about the fight and especially about letting you and your brother watch. I am so thankful though, that God sent you to us, you are an angel from Heaven, a most precious child.

Journaling for the second one:

Of course Daddy and I knew that there was something wrong., You were a little big late walking, you had an odd crawl, you kind of tip toed, and your right leg muscle was not developing like your left. We were referred to a physiatrist in Indiana who diagnosed you with a tight right heel cord. We could handle that. You started physical therapy, had botox, serial casting, and wore an ankle foot orthotic. Really, we could handle it.When we moved to Iowa, we went to a new physiatrist who recommended a different kind of therapy. We waited to hear from our insurance and that was when we found out. I opened the letter and scanned it. No one had told us. No one had said those words to us before. Here it is, in black, viciously circled, denied, not medically necessary. It hurt. Plain and simple, it hurt. I called the doctor, called the insurance; told them it was wrong, just wrong to not tell me the diagnosis, to let me find out like this. It didn’t take long though, not long at all, for me to look at you are realize. It doesn’t matter what the doctors say, what the insurance says, what anyone says, you are still our sweet little Jordy Girl!

6/16 Monday Challenge

Now don't panic! I don't want you thinking about Christmas quite yet....unless you want to. After what I thought was a totally easy challenge last week that didn't get many takers, I'm going to stretch your brains this week. I want you to use holiday paper on a non-holiday layout. Something like this:

I took a patriotic-themed kit and used it for a layout that didn't relate at all to the theme. So that's your challenge this week.

Where is the scrapbooker?

Have you ever looked at your scrapbooks and thought was I there? Are you too busy behind the camera to remember that people what to see your photo too? Have you had big events in your life and no photos have been taken to document it?

Good photos or bad you need to be in your scrapbooks! These photos are not very good. They are taken in a gymnasium and outside as it was getting dark. They were also taken by my family who I must admit are getting better at photos.

I will include these photos in a BOM (Book of Me) page to document my struggle as a working mom to complete my Associates in Applied Science Travel and Tourism. It took me 2 years, 8 quarters and over 30 classes (not include previous college I got credit for.) I am the first one in my family to graduate too. It is an accomplishment that I am very proud of.

So... the next time you look at your books.... ask yourself WHERE IS THE SCRAPBOOKER? If you don't see yourself, hand over the camera and scrap the photos they take... good or bad. You and the generations that follow will be happy you did.

Monday Challenge!

Good Morning, Everyone! I'm glad to "see" you this Monday morning. Of course, you know that Mondays bring new challenges, so let's get started.

This week's challenge is going to be so very easy. All you have to do is do a very little bit of journaling on a layout.....and then change it up a little. I want a layout that has journaling words that jump out, like you can see in the journaling about Easter in my layout.

See how some of the words are larger and different colors, drawing attention to them? This is so easy to do. Type your journaling in a word processing program (like Word). Go back and highlight a word you want to emphasize. Change its color and/or its size, then go to the next word, repeating this process.

Let's hit the highlights in our journaling this week!

Teacher Appreciation Album

As a "end of the year thank you" to my first grade daughter's teacher I created a year in review album that the class presented to her earlier in the week. In addition to the traditional scrapbook pages that I created I had each of the students create their own "I Love Mrs. X Because" page so it was a very special album indeed. She was surprised and thrilled, which in turn thrilled me.

School Info Sheet

I had such grand ideas when my youngest started school. One of those ideas is having him fill out this information sheet after every year in school. As you can see, this is the last one he filled out--it says "First Grade" and he's just finished 7th Grade, so I haven't been very good about this!

I want all of you to learn from my mistake, so I'm posting about this now. I made the questionnaire in a Word Document. It includes the following "questions" to be filled out by your child in their own handwriting:

For the first/left-hand page, I put my child's Fall and Spring photos (they had two taken that year) and the class photo. I'm printing out three of these ASAP for each of my kids in school so I can finally getting back on track to documenting these school memories!

6/2 Monday Challenge--It's a Feature Presentation

We've got summer vacation in full swing at my house, which means I'm seeing a lot of my kidlets. This week, I want you to create a layout which concentrates on one feature....it can be one of yours, one of your kids' or if you have SBGs, one of theirs, too. Something like this:

A Month of Challenges

June is going to be a challenging month for all you loyal SA scrappers. I have 15 challenges that I will issue over the month of June. Most of the challenges will involve you finding a ScrapAddict kit (virgin or tarnished) and a ScrapAddict sketch to use to complete the challenge. To give you peek at the challenges and an idea of what's to come here is the first challenge....

Scrap a Quirk using a virgin or tarnished SA kit and sketch. Here is my example for quirks.

The journaling is a bit hard to see it says this: Quirks, quirky, quirkiness….such a fun little word. I have a little quirk, bet you do too…..oh, you know, quirks, oddities, peculiarities, idiosyncrasies, eccentricities, okay so you all understand what I mean-I’m talking about those OCD tendencies we all seem to have.

Why did you move the magazine on the coffee table? It’s supposed to be at this end, not in the middle. When setting the table the plate always goes first, then the fork, then the knife and then the spoon, never in any other order because in any other order it’s just not right.

You never want to play cards with Katie, well, okay you can play cards with her but bring your own. Well, maybe not cause she would still have to sort them first before shuffling, sort them in her order...you can’t shuffle unsorted playing cards. Why? Well, because they are unsorted, that’s why!! She collects playing cards, opens them, sorts them according to her particular order and then puts them back in their box. After playing with them you can’t put them back in their box without them being sorted. Don’t even attempt to put them back, you take your life in your hands...Step away from the cards and NOBODY will be hurt. When at my folks house she was cleaning their drawers, found 2 decks of cards and stopped to sort them in the “proper Katie order.”

School is coming to an end ...

School is almost over. The kids are getting antsy, ready for classes to be out and the freedom of summer to begin. But before school gets out take a minute for a few last-minute pictures and use them to make some fun end-of-the-year layouts. Here are some ideas:

First Day/Last Day photos. Compare a picture of them on their first day of their current grade and on the last day. Note the changes.
Take photos of the child with their teacher. Have them write a little something about their teacher and their experiences with him/her.
As you child to dictate their experience in this particular grade. Ask them what they learned, what their favorite thing was, who their friends are, what they liked to do, etc.
Don't forget the friends! An important part of any childs school experience is their friends. Take photos of your son/daughter with some of their best friends and do a layout with them.

Time is running short. Take those pictures now. I can't wait to see all the layouts!!!

AD Challenge for May 26th

We will be leaving early in the morning for Memorial Day festivities so I am posting
today's Ad Challenge a bit early.

We had our big NSD Crop a couple of weeks ago and one of the challenges was to use the
title.....If Only. I racked my brain trying to come up with something. I came across this ad
and was immediately inspired. I love the circles!

As you can see in my interpretation of the ad I changed some of the circles to squares, as well as changing the orientation of the layout to landscape. AND, I used no photos! GASP!

Organizing your kits

Ok, you've signed up for all your wonderful Scrapaddict kits, now what do you do with them. Scrap them , of course! Unless you are like 99.9% of the SA subscription fans who can't use up the kits in the month they arrive. Congrats...you are offficially a hoarder. There are many different ways of organizing the kits so you have them right at your finger tips. My personal organization is the no organization method. I have a large plastic file box that I picked up at office max. Once the kits arrive and I fondle them a bit, I just slip them in the front of the box. This way they stay in order by month (relatively)and they are right by my desk. If you are the organized type, you can use the cardboard that comes in the box to make dividers so if you do happen to take a kit out of the box, it can go right back where it belongs. You can also use these homemade dividers to sort your kit by colors, theme, manufacturers, etc. Whatever. However you decide to organize your kits, make sure you take them out every once in awhile and use them up! Here's my "organization"

5/19 Monday Challenge

I hope you are all rested up from our catch-up challenge this week. I promised you that after giving you a catch up week last week (and I certainly got some catching up done....), that this week would be a thinker. For some of you it will be harder than others. It will require you to locate two different photos from different time periods.
I want a layout this week that compares a photo of you or someone in your family as a baby/child, to that same person older. I also want you to think about the story you want to tell. Is it simply the passage of time? Or is there something else that you are thinking of? I have done this in a couple of ways as you can see here. In any case, that's your challenge for the week. Start digging for those older photos and tell some kind of story....make a connection between then and now.

Traveling this Summer? Scrap while you're away!

I'll start by saying I don't go to crops. I like to scrap at home when the mood strikes me and I get too social at crops to actually complete anything. Now, why on earth did I tell you that? Well, so that you know I've never really preplanned or packed anything for scrapping away from home!

Recently, my husband's work sent him to a seminar in Vegas and I was lucky enough to tag along. I realize that most people traveling to Vegas would plan to sit by the pool, gamble, or take in a show. This is just another reminder of how I am NOT most people :) Me, I planned to sit in the hotel room while dh was in meetings all day and SCRAP!

So, I grabbed the basics, my trimmer, hermie tabs, and scissors. I then grabbed some scrapaddict kits and went through my photos to find ones that worked with the kit colors or themes. I checked to see if I'd want to add anything like letter stickers, or if I'd need some other form of adhesive. I stuck all of this into my Making Memories adorable pink bag (the shoulder one that I usually use to transport papers to and from school in) and I was all set!

I had no problems with security, and waltzed right onto the plane. I didn't try to do anything in the air other than sketch a couple of ideas for layouts and sleep.

The first day of meetings for dh was a full day of playing for me! I went and got a Coke Zero, checked the wireless connection on the computer and played away! I was happy to see that my link to Scrapaddict would not be a problem:

While I do admit I would have wanted a couple other things for the layout, I was happy with how everything turned out! I was able to get four layouts completed, spend lots of time online, and had no one pulling my leg asking me to get them a snack. Ahhhh, my idea of a vacation!

Childhood Memories

As much as I love to take new pictures and scrap them, I sometimes find myself feeling very guilty about all the older pictures sitting neglected in my stash. While it's important to document the here and now before I forget it, the old pictures deserve every bit the attention my recent photos do. The problem is, those older pictures aren't usually that inspiring. Most are old and faded and smaller in size than today's pictures. I have to give myself a kick in the rear sometimes and remember that it's all about the memories, not the photos. I know because I really enjoy going back and looking at the pages I do of my childhood memories, no matter how bad the photo. For instance, one tiny picture of me with my three siblings (a very rare shot), sparked a full page of journaling that I now treasure. One itty bitty photo of me brought back my very earliest childhood memory, and made for a favorite layout of mine.

I should feel lucky to HAVE photos of some of my memories because another problem I run into is having a wonderful memory to document with no photo to go along with it. There are a couple of ways around this problem. In one case, I was remembering my sentimental fondness for my grandma's kitchen during my childhood and remembered that she had given me a memento from there. I snapped a photo of the sugar dish, a prized possession of mine, and poured my heart out about what it meant to me, obviously far more than the piece of plastic it consists of.

Sometimes I just have to scrap a memory even though I have no pictures to go with it. My family rarely took pictures at Halloween when I was little, but I felt the need to document my fun times anyway. Another thing I knew I wanted to document was how I got my name. Other than randomly selecting a baby photo to go on the page, there isn't anything that goes with it, but it's an important memory to document. What really helps in these cases is hitting the Sketch Gallery. It's a no-brainer to turn those sketches into photo-free layouts.

Getting these pages finished fills up my Book of Me. There is no one more qualified to tell your story than you and who cares if your pictures are old or even non-existent? Those memories are just as important as the stories we tell about our kids. I challenge you go put your story down on pages anyway. You won't regret it.

5/12 Monday Challenge--let's play catch-up

It is traditional after these cyber crops to give you a week's reprieve on the challenge so you can catch up and get your ducks in a row. I know there is some kind of challenge that you maybe wanted to do, but didn't quite finish. I know I have a list this week of things I want to accomplish. This is the week to get it done, because I promise that next week I'll be back with a vengeance. I promise you that next week's challenge will be a stretching, growing experience. :) If you were a mega-scrapper last week and managed to finish off absolutely everything, then you had more scrapping time that I did! And you get to take one of those ads or sketches and do a different take on it. Pick one of the sketches and rotate it or use entirely different papers for a different feel.
And then brace yourself for next week!

Our NSD weekend crop was a blast...we couldn't have done it without some help. We'd like to thank Stephenie-who is a Fiskateer who came out and scrapped on Saturday but also did demos and brought in a big bag of goodies to raffle off. Thanks Stephenie!!!!

Changes to our Crops
Effective immediately: Our crops will now require a $15 deposit when you call to reserve space. You can give a credit card number over the phone or reserve in person to pay cash/check. The crops are still free- that $15 will turn into a merchandise credit on the day of the crop. If you cancel you will lose the deposit. If you don't spend $15 that day the credit does not carry over.

We will allow you to cancel if you do so more than 5 days in advance. If anyone is consistently cancelling we won't allow a refund at that point. For those customers already on our list for June you will be receiving a call this week asking for a credit card to secure your space.

We can only hold a space for 24 hours without payment. Thanks for your cooperation in this matter.

You've been waiting and now you can sign up. This class will be held on location at a local park on June 22nd- Sunday at 5pm. Please note: You will not be bringing your children at this time. We had a major weekend crop for our local customers this past weekend. I even gave them a challenge sheet that Deanna had cooked up for us. The weekend was a great success...we had a full house on each day and lots of fun. On Friday the group (even one male!) played and cropped til Midnight and we had some winners from our Calendar game. On Saturday we were lucky enough to have Stephenie our very own Fiskateers girl crop in *our* store. The demos she did were awesome and the croppers were so excited by the goodies she brought for everyone. We were so surprised that she did that for them. I was sorry to have missed it (but *someone* had to slave over a hot stove to make that pasta sauce ;) The group cropped til Midnight on Saturday too.

Then on Sunday I was lucky enough to be able to crop WITH the group and what a fun group they are. We talked TheNana into going out for Cold Stone ice cream for us and we all had a great time laughing and scrapping. I even got 3 pages done- amazing since we were super busy and I kept stopping to help Caitlin and Brittany check people out.

I'm constantly amazed by the people around our store who are willing and wanting to see us make it a success. From our loyal employees to our customers...I'm truly touched to see such great friends come together to make this a fun filled weekend.

We are going to be offering this fun type weekend crop once a month- so look for changes to our June calendar to come soon.

We did our GRAND PRIZE drawing on Sunday am before the doors opened and congrats to one of our regulars- Cindy G. for winning the prize package worth over $50. This package included: A new Glue Arts tape gun, 6x6 Cupcake Basic Grey paper pad, heart chipboard album, purse chipboard album, a bazzill frame for altering and a bunch of other goodies. It was too cute to get her phone message saying she had emailed but forgot to thank us for the gift. The real thanks goes to her and people like her for supporting our store!!!!

We are proud to be Plainfield's Scrapbook store.

For my online girls- I also thank you and am so grateful for the support the DT and customers give us. From our online store to our huge message board and gallery- I love having my home away from home. And I hope all of you are doing your best on our week's challenges. Don't be so busy scrapping that you forget to take advantage of our sales....it's an awesome deal and we are going to extend it by one day.

The sale will end officially on a week from today because when I got to work this am- the power went out right as we opened (an omen? LOL). We allowed some shoppers in but when I went to get Anna from preschool we realized that the power was out everywhere. So we closed up finally and called it a day. It was a nightmare here today. The power is back on in the schools but we didn't have power still to Scrap Addict. Hopefully by tomorrow. Amazing how much we rely on power. If you tried to call or email I wasn't able to get them at work (cordless phones) and we couldn't open the register or check out customers. :(

Tiny Scrappers

If you don't already know, ScrapAddict offers a mini kit subscription for kids. My six year old daughter Meg has had the honor of being a Design Team member for the kid's kit for two and a half years now. She looks forward to her monthly kits and always digs eagerly into her bag for what she considers "the best part", the embellishments.

Meg has been "scrapping" with me since she was three but I'm so grateful for the opportunity she's had here at ScrapAddict. Because of her DT stint she's already into her second 8.5x11 album. It is so fun to see her progression over the past couple of years and I know these books will be treasures for the both of us in the years to come.

To me, Meg's thought process is just as great as her final creation. She's really big into paper piecing (specifically cutting her patterned paper into animal, house and cave shapes), smiley faces, and more recently, finding unique uses for the embellishments (photo corners as hats.) I always include her thought processes into my gallery description when uploading her layouts to the gallery and print them off and attach them to the back of her pages before putting them away in her album.

For those of you with young children I heartily encourage you to get them to scrap with you on a regular basis. Even if it's only 1-2 layouts a month they're creating memories and art that you will treasure forever.

4/28--Challenges All Over the Place

Good morning Everyone!!
I have the Monday morning from you-know-where, so I'm posting this a little early. All the better to get your week started off right. First off, we have the Monday challenge. For this one, I want you to find that very Zen place inside you that will embrace and cherish white space. I want you to create a layout that is mostly white space. Be very selective about where you want your photo placed and what elements you want to add and then walk away!
Next we have this week's Ad Challenge. It's very much me.....square and inside the box. But it has some great journaling space and room for at least three, maybe more, photos. You can see what I did with it here.
I also have a sketch challenge going this week. C'mon over to the site and get some challenges done before our NSD crop starting later this week.

Stamping with Bubblewrap

Most of you have probably already noticed I've been stamping with bubblewrap lately and I really like the unique result you can come up with. I decided to give you some simple basic instructions on how easy this is to do and maybe some of you will try it.

First I choose the papers I'm going to work with, then choose the background cardstock and a coordinating color of paint. I cut off a piece of the bubble wrap and with a foam brush lightly brush all over with the paint. Kind of do this quickly as it dries quickly on the plastic. Then, quickly press the painted bubblewrap onto the cardstock and then lift it up. If you are like me you like to have an uneven amount of paint left on the cardstock. Really gives it kind of a distressed look. When, it's all dry in usually 30 minutes or less you can go ahead with the rest of your page as usual.

On the layout, "Scrap-aholic" I've used it as part of my background. And, on the layout, "Miracles" I've used it as a bottom border.

Here are a couple examples I've come up with and I really like this technique and will be using it more in the future. Hope to see what you can do with it too!

writing a yearly love letter to your children...

each & every year since my first daughter, Jordan, was born i've written love letters to each of my girls on their birthday. in 365 days there is SO much change that goes on while they are young that i want to summarize their year past year in a love letter to them.
i include...

-all of their major changes (like potty training, getting rid of binky's, habits, learning to ride a bike)
-relationships with loved ones & friends & how they have evolved & any new ones that have developed
-what they like to do with their time (play, read, watch movies, be w/ friends, etc) & make sure to include specific mannerisms.
-a list of favorite things
-anything you want to specifically touch on that is significant

it's a great way to start out a "new year" older in their albums & something that i enjoy reading after years go by. it captures their age & really sets things in time.

so many fun ways to do this as well... here are some of my examples...

*this layout is one i "dreamed" up...you know i come up with some of my best ideas just before i drift off to sleep. i took my small circle punch (& you could use any shape) to punch out images from my contact sheets from Costco. the photos are ones from her 2nd year & added a few snip-its of scraps as well.

this layout is using the March 2008 Damask Me No Questions kit. which happens to be one of my all time favorite kits! this is a straight forward letter & photo layout.

for this layout i typed out all her journaling/love notes & cut them apart & scattered them around my photos.

& in doing this blog entry i realized i never did Jordan's 10 year birthday letter...off to double check but it's not in my gallery...hmmm!

**Effective immediately - in an effort to control our inventory we are no longer making up "extra" class kits. The only time we will offer extras will be to class attendees. There will be rare times we may have a kit available after a class but they are not going to be discounted.  In addition we also require you to prepay for your class so we know how many people to expect. Classes are non-refundable. Please sign up early as our classes have become pretty popular now that we are entering spring!

**We also will be giving out a SUPPLY sheet prior to each class. Make sure you get yours or we can email it to you. See sidebar for the mandatory "minimum" Class Kit you should be bringing to all classes. This will cut down on time for sharing items.

It's NATIONAL SCRAPBOOK DAY WEEKEND in one week! Are you ready?   Don't you deserve to take some time out for your favorite hobby? Join us at Scrap Addict for a weekend full of FUN. We are having a WEEKEND long crop that is FREE. Signups have already begun for Fri/Sat/Sun so sign up soon. The crop runs on Fri from 10am-Midnight, Sat from 10am-Midnight and Sunday from 10am-5pm.

Please note: You can sign up for one or all of the days. All of our crops begin when our store opens at 10am on Fridays but feel free to still sign up if you can't be there til later (after work, etc). Also our SAT May 3rd Crop will be our PASTA crop which is also free.

4/21 Monday Challenge - To DIE For!

So lately I've been in a use-it-up mode - looking around to see what I have that I haven't used in a long time and finally putting them to use. So this challenge is back to basics with something that was popular when many of us started scrapbooking -- die cuts.

Now, I'm not asking you to search out your really dusty pile of OLD die cuts. There are plenty of new and recent ones to use. There were some fabulous ones in the March "Damask Me No Question" kit. Scenic Route has those wonderful die-cut arrows. Many brands of journaling boxes are die cuts. Heck, I'd even be happy if you used your die-cut machine (who has a dusty old QuicKutz or Sizzix out there???).

So dust off the die-cuts and get to work. I can't wait to see what you come up with!!!

A time of reflection...

Today is my 44th birthday. I usually find birthdays to be a time of reflection. I wonder and think about life as it is, how I wanted it to be and how it hasn't been. I occasionally wonder what was my mom like at this age, what did she like, and where was she in her life at my age?

Recently I did this layout reflecting on my life at almost 44. I love the way that it turned out. Some day when one of my girls reaches the age of 44, she will be able to look and compare what her life is like compared with mine.

I don't want you to think that this is the only occassion that you can do a page of reflection. Try doing your thoughts of motherhood on Mother's day, your feelings on living in the USA for the fourth of July, or your religious beliefs on Easter or Christmas. You can write a letter to your father (living or deceased) on Father's day. Even do a whole page devoted to cheese cake on National Eat Cheesecake day - which is July 30th by the way. (According to http://library.thinkquest.org/2886/foo.htm - a site that is devoted to the dates of many bizzare food holidays! Dang, I missed Cheeseball day by 2 days!) How about a page with a single photo of a child reflecting on your life at their age or how they remind you of you when you were a child.

Photos are optional on a reflection page. Take a million photos of your next desert!!! You never know what kind of journaling you can come up with to go with them. For now, think about a reflection page you would like to do. Go and write the journaling now whether on paper or on your blog so that when you find the perfect photo, memorabilia or paper to go with it, you will be ready!

Journal This ...

One of my favorite products lately is all the fun journaling boxes. Several companies have journaling products available and they come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors.

My favorite use for them is, of course, journaling. It makes a page go much quicker when I have a space ready for journaling right away.

They also can be used as great embellishments. The heart box on this page is actually a journaling spot from Heidi Swapp.

Of course, some journaling boxes are so big that they can be used for more than one purpose. Here I added not only journaling but also my title to the box with room left for a few little embellishments.

Next time you're looking for a fun addition to you page consider turning to your journaling boxes.

We've been hearing from our customers lately and have heard that people are spreading rumors that we are closing. We are not closing our doors...if you have any questions about the validity of these rumors please call us directly.

We have been very honest with our customers regarding the slowness of business in general but please know we are doing everything we can to succeed. We've seen a real slowdown of business and are hoping things pick up soon so we can stay in business for years to come.

Rumors of this sort are not helpful. If we are closing our doors we'll for sure notify all of you with nothing but honesty like we've always done. Thanks!

It actually felt and even smelled like sweet spring around here this weekend. We'll see if it sticks around.

Catherine is away and has asked me to do today's Monday challenge. I am also doing the ad challenge for today as well. So do what I did and combine them both!

A couple of weeks ago I purchased a new Fiskar's punch at Target. It's called "threading water" and it is so cool! Got me thinking why I don't use more of my many punches. So my challenge is to use a punch. You know you have them so show me what you got.

Hi, everyone, my name is Lily Goldsmith and I'm scrapaddicts newest design team member. Most of you know that this is actually a home coming for me. I first discovered scrapaddict back in 2003 when a girlfriend showed me her kits. I was so impressed that I joined the site immediately and signed up for my own kits. While I joined for the kits, I was quickly caught up in the wonderful camaraderie of the message boards. Eventually, Felicia chose me as a dt member, where I remained until the beginning of last year. After I left the dt I wandered the net a bit. I found another site and applied and was accepted for their dt. While it was a wonderful experience, I always felt like a visitor in someone else's home so I continued to hang out a bit on the message baords here. Meanwhile, I was talking to Felicia about something unrelated. I mentioned how much I missed being a part of the scrapaddict dt and asked if she had any open spots. I think she took pity on it me and invited me back to the design team when my term at the other site ended. The rest as they say, is history. I was so excited to begin my duties in april and I am still in awe of the wonderful kits Felicia puts out month after month, year after year. You'd think it'd get old after 5 years but they just keep getting better and better. Even while I wasn't as active on the boards, I continued to receive the kits. I wasn't sorry that I took the opportunity to check the waters at other sites but as Dorothy from the wizard of Oz said "if I ever go looking for my heart's desire again, I won't look any further than my own back yard. Because if it isn't there, I never really lost it to begin with!".

You might be wondering whose birthday it is. Well, it's my baby boy's birthday today. He is ONE year old! Yesterday, I had some photos taken at the photo studio at the mall. They turned out great, and I can't wait to scrap them. I had so many favorites that I had to really think about how many photos (and what size) I would be giving to family, how many I would need for scrapping, and how many photos for displaying in my home. What I forgot to do was make a list of family members and what sizes they prefer, so I thought I would remind everyone about this in my blog post. I was also making a mental sketch of how I was going to lay out the photos on a scrapbook page, but I could also have sketched it out by hand as I was looking at the photos at the studio. Finally, I was imagining what papers would go perfectly with my photos. I decided that I would use one of my May assignment kits to scrap at least my favorite photo, so I'm afraid most of you will have to wait until May to see my page! ;-)

Scrapping Spurts

This past year it seems that my scrapping comes in spurts, a "feast or famine" type of thing. Right now I'm definitely in a scrapping famine. I find that when life takes precedence over "JulieWorld" I lose my mojo entirely. Instead of "itching to scrap" I find myself avoiding my room entirely. And the longer I'm away, the more distractions I can find to keep me busy elsewhere. Why is that? And does this happen to anyone else?

I'm currently out of town visiting my parents. Armed with a tote full of scrapping magazines and books I am happily discovering that I'm ready to get back into the swing of things. I just hope that nothing big awaits my return because this girl is ready to scrap again. Wish me luck!

getting those photos organized by date...

do you have your photos all in a box with no dates?
do you have them in the right year?
do you have them labeled with the specific date?
what type of container do you store your photos in?

whichever one of the statements you fit into i believe there is always a bit/piece of someone's organization style that could work for you. in addition to sharing mine...i hope that you share how you store your photos so i can gather more ideas as well.

i, personally, need to have my photos in chronological order (yes, i'm type A, LOL). i however, since joining SA, don't scrap in chronological order though. totally enjoying the freedom it provides to go with your gut & scrap a set of photos that you're inspired by at the time! love that! & it took me only 9 years to figure that one out! LOL

i have created a document in Word that helps me keep my dates in order. each time i take photos & upload to costco i add the new events into the document. another benefit of this system is that when i assemble my albums i know how the pages should go in. i created a table with 4 separate columns...one for the date, the second is who's album it goes into (which of my 3 girls), the third is for the occasion/event & lastly is if it's done. also, when a layout totally is done (if for all three girls i wait & cross off when all three are done) i cross it off with a light colored marker. i keep a printed copy in my scrapbooking area at all times for reference when it comes time to date each layout.

i also use this list when i go through magazines or see an idea online that i want to use for a layout...i make notes off to the side of it's "line" in the table. if it's a loose sheet of paper i printed i put it with the photos as well. if it's a page in an idea book i just write down the page number along with what book it is.

as far as organizing my photos... i have them in a hanging file folder box & keep every event in its own folder. i just thumb through when i scrapbook & find something that "moves me" at the time...if i need to know the date...i look on my sheet & find it quickly & easily...no having to remember at all! :)

please share how you organize your photos...i love learning new ideas in this area!

i didn't realize until i uploaded this post that my photo of my 2 pages has on there lynne's new little guy's name on there when she told me about a month ago what name they chose...the stars are on there for her as well...as she'll soon find out :)

3/31 Monday Challenge

I have a name for mundane, repetitive, never-ending things at my house like laundry, or meal preparation, or exercise ( ). I call them Gerbil Jobs. You know how you have a gerbil and his cage and to give him some exercise you get one of those wheel things and the gerbil thinks its the best thing EVER. He jumps on there and runs and runs and runs and runs and runs. And he never gets anywhere. Just like those jobs.....you can do all the laundry in the house and you turn around and it's there again....like it grew overnight.

Stay with me...I'm going to connect this...sort of. Spring is starting to make an appearance in various areas of the country which brings to mind things like spring cleaning and spring holidays like Easter where you do things like dye eggs, and hunt them. Where I'm going with this.....there are certain things you do every year.....without fail. They're kind of like extended Gerbil Jobs in a way because you turn around and it's time to do them again.

So this week, I want you to create a layout about an extended Gerbil Job...something you do every year without fail. Do you spring clean? Document it. Do you make New Year's Resolutions and write them down? Do you do something to mark the changing of any season? Do you have an annual school shopping excursion in the late summer? Do you have to take a drive to see the changing leaf colors? Do you look forward to the first day of summer fishing? Do you eat Popsicles or ice cream every day in the summer? Do you make homemade ice cream for the 4th of July? Do you take a trip to the same place every year? Gather several photos from across the years and make a layout about what you love about it. I don't know about you, but No Boy Thursday may be making a regular appearance at our house.

30 Minutes or LESS!

I usually don't like spending hours and hours on one layout. Scrapping is fun for me and I want to keep it that way, so I don't like agonizing over one page. So, I thought I'd give you instructions on scrapping quickly. This page was done in under 30 minutes, except that I already had my photo chosen and printed.

{I always place everything down until I like the way it looks, then go back and ink everything and then start glueing in place.}

First I chose my photo and printed it, then matted it. Then I chose my pp's. Limit yourself to 10 minutes for this process or you could spend alot of your time trying to chooose the 'perfect' pp's! Then, I chose some already cut papers and a piece of cardstock for the background. Laid the pp pieces on my cs along with the photo until I liked what I saw. Tore the vertical strip down one side. Then, chose 1 deco strip. Here I chose a Doodlebug paper frill and placed it along the side. Next, I placed the butterfly and cut out different colored pieces for the accent colors. Chose some black brads to go down the center of the butterly. Next, chose 3 button accents to match. I used Love, Elsie Chipboard Buttons along with tiny brads. Then, I found a title sticker, which described the photo and lastly, chose a journal tag and quickly jotted down my thoughts. Wa La! DONE!

Supplies Needed for 12 x 12 layout -
1 photo (4 1/2" high x 5 1/2" wide)
1 CS for background, 1 photo matte
3 pieces Patterned Paper (8 1/2" Wide x 9" high), (8 1/2" wide x 3/4" high), (3" wide x 11 1/4" high)
1 deco trim.........ribbon, paper frill, deco strip
1 main accent......butterfly, flower, star, etc.
3 smaller accents......buttons, brads, flowers, etc.
1 title
1 journal tag

I hope you'll try scrapping quickly and see what you come up with. Since I have ALOT of photos to scrap for my grandkids I think I'm gonna use this same technique and design for the other kids' pages as well. Possibly turning the design around. Would be a pretty quick way to get 5 layouts done!

Precious Photos

I have been spending some time going through and organizing photos. It seems that for me this is a bit of a never ending process. I am pretty good at keeping up with current photos but because of scrapbooking I have become “the keeper of photos” for my family. And I am actually very happy about that! I mean imagine my luck to have the photos from my maternal grandparents honeymoon to Mt. Rushmore. And when looking at the photos seeing Mt. Rushmore under construction – wow – that is history!! A little less remarkable in terms of American history but just as important in my personal history is a picture of my paternal grandfather home on leave from World War II holding my dad as an infant for the first time. And a picture of my dad and mom on their wedding day. I am not sure how or when I am going to scrapbook all of these treasures but I do know that I am so pleased to be the unofficial keeper of the photos in my family.

challenge for this layout.

Remember that stuff? Gosh, I had to have it in every
color. (of course I am still that way)

I have a new toy!

I have a new toy. With this toy I can play late at night without waking my dh sleeping in the next room. There will be no need to go to the kitchen to pound on a solid surface. The best thing about my new toy is that my poor old arthritic hands don't hurt when I use it. In fact I can use my new toy time and again with no adverse affects to my hands.

What might you ask is this wonder? This miraculous invention? My Crop-O-Dile! I realize its not a new thing and many of you probably already have it. But I just couldn't see how this doo-hickey could be "all that" and more. I mean, a hole punch is a hole punch, right? Wrong!

I've looked at the Crop-o-dile before but until recently I'd never been able to try it...I like "try before you buy." I was at a lss here in Indy to get some cardstock to finish a project. They had the Crop-o-dile and the new Big Bite out where you could try them. Both of these things "ate" through multiple pieces of heavy cardstock easily...and my hands didn't hurt. To use a regular hole punch even on 2 sheets of paper I have to use both hands and then it really does hurt. I tried 4 pieces of chipboard...punched easily.

While the Big Bite was appealing to punch holes anywhere on a layout I decided to buy the Crop-o-dile. Not only because of the price difference but because I rarely need to put a hole anywhere but on edges and if I do need to I can resort to my MM hole punch, hammer and trusty CM matt.

Punched quickly with one hand through 1/4" thick chipboard....now this is all I can show you of my current project because it's Laura/Scrapsnsmile's gift for guessing when I"d hit 14,000 posts...and I don't want her to know what's coming.

Adding that "extra something" to your pages

My kids have always loved my scrapbooks. They love to look through and see photos of themselves as babies or playing in a swimming pool or riding their bike for the first time, however they're getting older and becoming a little less interested in seeing my creations. But I've found a new way to get them hooked - the hidden Mickey's.

It all started in 2006 when we went to Disneyland for the first time as a family. My kids loved searching for the hidden Mickey's in Disneyland park so when I returned home I decided to incorporate that into my Disney pages. Each and every page in my Disneyland album has a Mickey head of some sort on it. Some are quite obvious.

Some are a little less so (hint: look carefully in the rocks behind us).

These were an absolute hit with the kids and 2 years later they are still regularly looking at the Disneyland albums to search for the hidden Mickey's.

Fast forward to 2008. We took a family vacation to Disneyworld this year and, as can be expect, came home with TONS of photos to scrap. The kids are all 2 years older and much wiser to my hidden Mickey ways so I knew I was going to have to be a little more stealthy this time. And I found just the thing to help me with that ... a teeny tiny Mickey head punch. AHA! Secret weapon to the rescue!!!

My first few pages have delighted the kids and they eagerly await my next completed Disney page. I'm thrilled that taking the time to add that "extra something" has been such fun for my kids. I hope in years to come they will look back on these albums regularly, even if it is just to search for hidden Mickey's.

So think about adding that little "extra something" to your scrapbook pages. Maybe pick up some sand while at the beach and use it as an embellishment on your beach photos. Or hide a heart on each page of your next mini album. There are so many little extras to choose from. Have fun with it! I can't wait to see what you come up with. :)

Challenges and Kits - Perfect Combination

The perfect combination for scrapbooking is a combo of challenges and new kits. I love a challenge. They motivated me last year to create 615 layouts for my family. This year, I've tried so hard to keep up with challenges. I am loving Deanna's March Oldies but Goodies Sketch challenge. http://www.scrapaddict.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=32033

I combined the new Damask me no Questions Kit http://www.scrapaddict.com/xcart/product.php?productid=28066&cat=299&page=1 and Deanna's Oldies Challenge to pull out my wedding photos from 1992! A long long time ago! This kit just seemed perfect.

The wonderful kit that Felicia and Company put together are so flexible. You can use them for a special set of pictures from last week or pictures taken in the last century. I look forward to new kits each month. I never know what they will call me to scrap. But you know what? They almost always help me to scrap at least one set of photos that I've been putting off.

My second layout from this kit was created using the sketch challenge for the week of March 10 featuring our vacationing Guest Designer Scrapnsmile's sketch. I stretched it to a 2 page spread for the remainder of my wedding photos.

I smile and put my scrapbooking supplies away... one kit - 2 two page spreads that have been waiting since 1992 to do. I have had a great weekend of scrapbooking thanks to the perfect combination of challenges and kits! YES!

Projetc kits

How often do you pick up project kits at the store or at your LSS? I was never one to even give these a second glance. Other than doing layouts, I'm not a huge fan of paper crafting projects. Just never had the knack for it. I did, however, come accross a cute Halloween kit in the clearance aisle at one of my local stores a few months ago. At $1.98, I couldn't resist but to give it a try.

All I had to do was supply my own pictures and a little glue. Everything else came in the kit. It was so surprisingly simple that I felt I cheated a little. It took me about half an hour to put it all together. (I can't even throw together a scrapbook page in that amount of time.) And, I honestly loved the results. Doing this kit was really fun, and I have since then come accross several other kits that I have purchased. Now that I'm getting the hang of these, I have been tempted to jazz them up a little and put my own spin on them. I'm a new fan of project kits!

Scrapping Large Photos

Although I'm a multi-photo scrapper for the most part, occasionally I'll have one picture that can really stand on its own. Typically I'll enlarge that photo to a 5x7 and scrap that. Once in a while, for an especially favorite photo, I'll enlarge the photo to an 8x10 or an 8x12 size because this really gives the photo more impact. Scrapping a huge photo is tricky, though. You don't have much room to embellish and you don't want to overpower the photo, but you also want to be able to accent the photo and maybe include a little journaling.

**SNEAK PEEK ALERT**
In this first (landscape) example, the papers in this upcoming April kit were just perfect for this favorite photo. I was able to include my title in the "dead space" part of the photo. Notice the rule of threes with the placement of the embellishment, located in the upper right, lower left, and then lower right hand corners. I also layered my embellishments to add some interest to the lower right hand corner.

The next example is by Linda (2sweetgirls) and you can see how she adds some interest with the added curve in her portrait photo. Notice how she also used the rule of threes here with her accents in the upper right hand corner, then her title on her photo, and lastly, her journaling in the lower right hand corner. She has also done some layering of embellishments with the journaling tucked into the ribbon with the word accent and heart on top of that.

So, the next time you have a favorite photo, enlarge it to 8x10 or 8x12 try scrapping this size! :-)

3/10 Monday Challenges!

Good Monday morning to everyone! It's supposed to be a sunshine-y day here headed for a spring-like 60 degrees. Certainly makes me want to open up my windows and let some fresh air in. I really love it when challenges are handed to me on a silver platter. On the SA message board last week there was some discussion about stamps....how we love to buy them and hoard them, but not use them a whole lot. So that's the Monday challenge for the week....to use a stamp you've never used before on a layout. I took the challenge myself this past weekend and did this layout. I used a Fancy Pants stamp on the bookplate, which was originally plain white. I thought it made the bookplate "match" up a little better with the BG papers.

On to our ad challenge. You can see the new ad here and also the layout I did with it.

JulieWorld Organizational Tips

There was a lot of chatter on the ScrapAddict boards this week regarding rubber/acrylic stamp and who knows, come Monday, there may be more yet to come. *major hintand I mean MAJOR* I love stamps, especially acrylic ones, but found that they were definitely "out of sight, out of mind" scrapping items for me. After the purchase of my Clip It Up last fall I came up with what I think is a very brilliant *wink* storage idea that perhaps some of you might be able to use.

I purchased several sets of the Tim Holtz Unmounted Refill Pockets

made for his unmounted stamp case, both manufactured by Cropper Hopper. Each package contains five very sturdy top loading see-through "envelopes" which can easily be hung on my Clip It Up. The size is perfect for the approximate 5x7 dimensions of the Autumn Leaves stamp sets as well as those created by other manufacturers.

Since I keep my Clip It Up on my main scrap desk I just flip the unit to see all of my stamp sets at a glance.

This system has worked really well for me and I'm finding that I use my stamps so much more than I did with my previous storage method.

I discovered another method of storage for those smaller individual stamps that we all tend to collect. This 2^nd storage solution involves the Cropper Hopper Zip N Flip envelope system. This product has clear top loading Ziploc envelopes that are staggered vertically onto a 3 holed punched backing and comes in two sizes. The medium size has 18 envies

while the larger size has 8 envies,

each size sold in sets of two. I packed several sets of these envies with my loose acrylic stamps and loaded them into a large 3 ring which I keep on a shelf. When I'm making cards I take the binder down and flip through my stamp collection. This system makes it very easy to see just what you have at a glance so no more "out of sight, out of mind."

Extending the life of your cards...

I love to make cards. The greatest thing is the instant gratification and thrill of completing something quickly that is handmade and sure to please. However, when I write in them, I feel like I ruin them. The joy is given to the person I sent it to and it is done. They enjoy them for a short while, it brightens their life and then might be put in a drawer and forgotten.

Recently I send the card unused. Unused?? You are asking??? I will write my note on a piece of white cardstock that fits inside the card. I also include a blank envelope (folded in half.) At the bottom of my note on the cardstock, I jot down a little bit for the receipient to spread the joy by share the card.

The first time I did that was last summer. Do you know that the person commented on that gift recently to me. I hope I helped her spread some joy to a person in her life that needs it.

3/3 Monday Challenge

It's time for another Monday challenge and today we're going to take a new perspective on design. This week, I want you to create a layout that sits on a slant or diagonal. This one is a little difficult for me to do because I'm a pretty straight line kind of gal, but here's an example...a little hard to see the edges because it's sitting on white cardstock. So let's see you take a new slant on a layout this week.

looking for a fun & easy way to change things up on your layouts? one perfect solution- vary the size of your photos. with small photos it gives room to maximize the amount of photos used, it lets you play with your creative space & it's a great way to use many photos of the "same subject" without having to create multiple layouts forcing yourself to narrow your photos down.

in this layout i printed all of the photos of my nieces one year photo shoot & printed them in 1 1/4" x 1 1/2" directly from my printer (HP D7360)...cut them all up & just randomly placed them on the layout...added a few strips of paper & a few embellishments & i instantly created a layout showcasing ALL of the photos instead of a whole album full. you can also do this with those cute little "contact sheets" many photo processors include when you get photos printed.

another way to change the mood is by using one LARGE photo. i do this ALL the time- it's one of my favorite layout boosters! many photo developers have caught on to us scrapbookers & they now offer the 8x12 size. LOVE IT! perfect way to make those layouts just pop right out of your albums & grab your loved ones attention!

It's Leap Day!

I've been googling about Leap Year and there's alot of fun poems and stories about it. I don't personally know anyone who was born on Feb. 29, but it would be an odd thing each birthday deciding when to have it either on Feb 28 or March 1. LOL :) I know I'm ready to move onto March with a bright new start. This year has started out really rough for my family; healthwise but everything is looking up now.

I just wanted to remind everyone to check in at the boards tomorrow as I will be posting the March board challenge. It's something that will definitely get you to scrappin' so set aside some time in your busy lives. I've already given a clue on the board.......oldie but goodie! Now, I'll give you another...........sketches!

Baby Madness!! ;)

Since I am only a few weeks away from the arrival of our new little one you can imagine that I am in full baby madness mode. We finally found the hardware to put the crib together and I have spend time washing all the sweet soft baby boy clothes and I am almost ready. What do I need now?? New baby scrapbook supplies! And when I was reading Felicia's report from CHA I was so happy to read that the CHA releases were lots of boy and lots of baby stuff! That fits my life perfectly! So I will be watching the new releases as Anita pots them and getting ready to place my pre-orders. I love this time if year after a trade show when all the new stuff keeps coming in! Keep an eye on the store and the message boards to see what great things you can't live without!

The last time that I had the pleasure of posting to the blog, I did two things:
1: Post on time (didn't happen this time, sorry!)
2: Talk about white space (going to happen again!)
So, we discussed the effective use of white space on layouts and saw some great examples from the gallery. So, that got me thinking.....What about white space on photos? I love having creative angles and perspectives in the photos that I take. This includes off setting subject of the photo so that there is a lot of empty space around them. Of course, I then have this incredible need to fill that empty space. I'm sure it has something to do with being a Virgo or baby of the family, whatever, it's a *need*
One of my favorite ways to fill the white space is to use it as a journaling spot. In this layout about how much I love the DVD player in my husband's Edge, there was a huge amount of space between the kids that just called to me to be journaled on.

I think that this made for a playful and unique way to add my jounaling to the layout.

Firsts

It's all about documenting...saving all the information and pictures, memories if you please...all the firsts in a family. You know what I'm talking about~you remember that first glimpse of your newborn, counting all the fingers and toes. Checking to see whose mouth, nose and eyes this new little one has...Oh, I hope he doesn't have Uncle Bert's nose, it's so big, you know. You take pictures, hundreds all to help you remember that special first in your life.

Think of all the "firsts" one normally document (can you say scrap?) First tooth, first step, first words, first day of school. This year I got pictures of Emily's (dd#2) first date...they looked so cute but alas it was not to be...they are better friends than a couple. But I have the pictures for that very first date she ever had...along with her tried and true reason for not dating before "Mom, guys are so needy and I don't have time for that right now!"

Hopefully, someone back home is documenting some of Sophie's firsts for me...her first set of contacts..she looks so different w/o her glasses. Her first driver's license. Yeah, I know she's almost 18 but her sister's had so many wrecks between 16 and 18 that we made her wait. If I've trained my family right they took pictures.

Later this year we will have another first...our Katie is getting married. I'm sure it was just yesterday I was counting all her fingers and toes! There will be enough pictures and notes and documenting of this first in our life.

But the first I'm looking forward to happens after the wedding, in November. For the first time in our married life, in the lives of our daughters and future son-in-law...all six of us will be able to vote. I've already got the lo planned, one big picture of the 6 of us, arm in arm, standing tall and proud on a sea of red white and blue....I guess you can tell I've been anticipating this "first" for a long time...actually I've known about it longer than some of the other firsts.

Don't let your "firsts" pass by without documenting them...let those generations to come know what was important to you. Document the love you have for your family, your faith in God, your love of country. Share it with those yet to be born, those yet to have their own "firsts".

Oh, and when I get the picture from voting I'll post it in the gallery!

The Monday Challenge!!

OK....so it's not really Monday. Sorry. My schedule is off a little with the holiday weekend. For this week's challenge, I want you to stretch and grow a little bit by creating a layout that documents comings and/or goings. It could be a big move, somebody leaving or joining the nest, just daily routine things or maybe something age-related, 1st day of school (or everyday of school or work). Think on this one. I've posted a couple of examples here for you to get the idea.

Blog Challenge 2/13

In my last entry, I talked about breaking out of my own comfort zones and doing some experimenting with my own style. I’ve since then done a few LO’s and the change has been really fun and refreshing. It’s been exactly what I needed to get my mojo going. I’m learning not to limit myself to using texture and colour, and in today’s scrapbooking industry there is such an abundance of things to choose from.

So, now I have a little challenge for you. The challenge will be to do a page using LOTS OF TEXTURE. Break out the chipboard, sewing machine, felt, or whatever you in your stash, and go to town. I would love to see your take on how you can incorporate LOTS of texture in your layouts. You will have until 2-22-08 to complete the layout. The winner of this challenge will be randomly drawn and will receive a $5.00 gift certificate to the Scrap Addict store. (Please be sure to post a link to your LO in the blog challenge thread so we can keep track of who is playing.) Good luck and have fun!!!!!

2/11 Monday Challenges

Morning, Everyone!
First off, let me tell you how great it was to see some of you out of your comfort zones last week with our one-photo-on-a-two-page-layout challenge. That was fun! Wasn't it.......Wasn't it? Well, you were really good sports about it and we had several takers who did an awesome job. This week, I can just about guarantee that you'll find the challenge easier. In keeping with the season, I want you to create a layout about something you love. I will, however, encourage you to think outside the box with this one. While our families would undoubtedly be first on everyone's list, is there something else you love that you could scrap about? How about a particular season, or pastime? How about a certain food? Just give that a passing thought as you come up with layout ideas this week.
We also have an ad challenge, which you can see above along with what I did with it.
Those of you who visit my blog got an early peek at this one this past weekend. See what you can do with it this week. Maybe you can use it as the design to document something you love.

Strip Journaling

I'm in love with strip journaling! Strip journaling allows me to fill my page with photos and still have room for journaling, as in this example:

Strip journaling allows me to see the patterned paper or other page elements underneath instead of covering it up, as in this example:

One way I used strip journaling recently was to make the journaling "block" in a specific shape, so that it functioned as a design element, too:

Justify Your Scrap Purchases!

If you’re like me you may have periods of guilt when it comes to your scrapping purchases. (Not too often mind you, but every now and then I do feel a bit of what I call “supply shame.”) One way to ease those pangs is to put your stash to good use for your kid’s school projects.

For example, my daughter’s school is having their annual Winter Sweetheart Carnival this coming weekend and as a room mom, I am in charge of decorating her class booth. One item required of every booth is a shoebox for ticket storage. Well those of you who know me know that I am not one to do anything halfway. One old shoebox, some cardstock, some buttons, some decorative tape, some bling and voila!…the best darned ticket box the school will ever see. :) I even dusted off my Cricut to create the lettering. How’s that for supply justification? *wink* And I will be further vindic ated when my supplies are put to additional use as I design and create the poster for their booth.

So remember, your scrapping supplies need not be used solely for your scrapbooking ventures. Volunteer to make a few projects for your child’s classroom and both you and the school will benefit from the experience.

Spring Cleaning in February

Do you ever get to the point in your scrap area when you just feel overloaded with...stuff? I had so much paper overflowing from my cabinet that it was hindering my scrapping mood and it was getting difficult to find things. Sometimes I couldn't even shut the drawers. I didn't want to go fishing in all that paper, hunting for things, so much of it just collected dust. I felt guilty anytime I thought of getting rid of it, though, so it just kept piling up and up since I don't have a ton of scrap time lately. I finally decided I was being ridiculous and got up the nerve to clean it out, even if I just put it in a big box to forget for a while. I was amazed at the paper I had in there from who knows when! Some of it I didn't even like anymore and wondered why I had bothered buying it in the first place. Some were kits that weren't really my style but I had been clinging to them thinking I might just find the perfect picture to go with them. At some point, you have to realize what you really will use and what will probably sit there growing into a larger fire hazard by the day.

Once I had weeded out everything I knew I wouldn't use, I decided I would find someone who would get some use out of it. I might be cleaning things out, but I don't like to be wasteful. A lot of trees died to make my scrap paper and my Environmental Science teacher would be aghast to see me toss it into the landfill. I contacted someone I thought would get use out of it and when she said she'd take it off my hands, I boxed it up and whisked it off to the post office before I could change my mind. I can't believe how relieved I feel! My scrap cabinet no longer overflows with paper I won't use and I have a lot less guilt at the thought of it sitting there, wasting away. I should have done this months ago!

Maybe you're the type of scrapper who only buys what you will use, but if you are like me and amass far more than you will ever need, think about a day of purging and cleaning. There are lots of things you can do with your unwanted stash, too. You can find a fellow scrapper to RAK it to, or we have a forum to trade kits if you have one you don't want but have your eye on another. Many schools and hospitals would love to have your donations as art projects for children. Let your own kids have it to play with or to make cards for grandma. There are plenty of ways to reduce your stash without feeling a pang of guilt. I did figure out the very best reason to clean out my cabinet, though...CHA is coming up and now I have room for more. Oh, the cycle never ends!

I {heart} new Scrap Supplies

There are SO many new products out there...and we have the best job in the world at this time....CHA time. If you aren't aware...CHA is Craft and Hobby Association and two times a year they put on a *huge* retailers only trade show. We can't walk out with product and we don't bring cash like an expo.....but we do get to see all the latest trends and walk a huge convention center being overwhelmed at every step by glorious goodies.

We leave on Sat for 4 days of sunshine albeit through a window at the tradeshow...then again I am not sure there *are* windows there . But we will "take one for the team" so to speak and buy and buy.
